Carp fishing at Chatfield with old friends, Ron and James, and one of my youngest fans, Jordan – what a great smart young kid. A fun time was had by all and almost half a dozen carp landed !
James and I arrived early morning at Chatfield. We had all planned to fish Roxborough Cove. However the National Guard were doing helicopter fire suppression training .Having blanked last year under similar conditions we decided to abandon Roxborough and head down to the southwest side fo the reservoir to fish for the day.
Neither James or I had actually fished the gravel ponds. We had heard there were some good carp to be found there so we got out lines out and sat back to enjoy the rest of the morning.
A few hours passed, without a single beep on the alarms or sign of carp action. Ron and Jordan arrived and as there would be 3 of us fishing 2 rods each we decided to move and setup along the south side of Kingfisher.
We setup, with Ron and Jordan taking the swim in the center, James picked the right side, I chose the left. We had anglers to the far right and far left of us meaning we were pretty well boxed in. The wind really picked up after lunch, Ron setup his bivvy for himself and Jordan. James and I toughed it out in our chairs.
Ron and Jordan had the first fish on – a nice 9.5 lb common was landed. Jordan claimed it as “his” fish – which was true, as Ron had said his left hand Rod was Jordan’s virtual rod for the session.
A little while later, James followed up within his first common for the day, a hard fighting 5 lb’er.
Ron had his second run and fish of the day, a real good looking 6.5 lb common. James, not wanting to be left out of the fun, hooked into a real beast. A good fight later he had a chunky 17 lb common on the bank, at 30.5″, this was a master angler award fish for Colorado !
I did finally managed a small channel catfish, not worthy of film. The afternoon wore on and the wind eventually began to calm down. James banked the last fish for the session, a nice 9 lb common.
All told, a great session with friends and I was honored to meet Jordan, Ron’s son. Our plan is for Ron to get Jordan his own smaller rod setup so next time we are on the banks the young lad can land his own fish – hands on !
