CarpQuest – S1E7 – Willow Springs Ponds Carp Fishing
My second session down at Willow Springs Ponds, Fountain CO. This was a short morning session at the Ponds. This time I fished the smaller pond with a friend, James, who had told me that there were common carp were in this pond. He also updated me that the larger pond has grass carp stocked to keep the weeds under control.
I got to the pond late and fished from about 9:15am to 1pm. It was a nice sunny morning, temperatures reached the low 50s which was great given that we had a snowstorm and temps in the 20s earlier in the week.
Again I was fishing with the Big Bobs corn on the hair with an Enterprise corn pop up, old fashion oats packbait. The pond was VERY shallow today, the water level down at least 4-5′. We could only have been fishing in 2-3′ of water at best. I fear that if the drought continues here in Colorado this pond is in serious danger of drying out. The large pond next door still has a good water level.
We caught 3 common carp this morning, I banked a 7 lb 12oz, a 8 lb 10oz – these were my first carp banked from Willow Springs, so very pleased I was. James got he largest of the session at 10 lb 9oz on a strawberry dough ball. Well done James!
I left around 1pm and will return again to Willow Springs though next time may fish the larger pond in the hunt for my 1st ever grass carp !
