CarpQuest – S1E6 – Runyon Lake Carp Fishing
A late morning and after session down at Runyon Lake, north of Pueblo. This was my first session at this venue and I had heard many rumors of the monster carp to be found there. The day was forecast to be warm and sunny and when I arrived at the lake I could see many carp showing, jumping and rolling. Everything indicated a great session to come!
I fished again with sweetcorn on the hook and a panko based bait. The first hour or so were quiet, a couple of tentative bleeps on the alarms. However, this was the calm before the storm. The carp finally were onto the bait and came thick and fast. I managed to bank 5 carp in about 6 hours fishing, 4 around 4-6 lbs and one good mid-double that jumped/Houdini’d the net whilst I was sorting out the cameras! Now this was an Epic Fail!
Another angler stopped to chat during a pause in the action, he noted that not only was Runyon packed with carp but also some good sized catfish. A state record channel cat came from this lake years before.
I will certainly return back to Runyon to seek out those monster slabs that lie beneath the waters.
All told, it was a great session some great carpy action, constant runs and glorious weather in the low 80’s, way hotter than predicted, I actually ran out of water!
Tight-Lines,
John
