CarpQuest – S1E27 – Utah 2013 Carp Fishing – Bear Lake – Part 2
The second part of my first morning session on my vacation at Bear Lake, in Utah.
I had started the day with a fine double of mirror carp in the net. For the rest of the morning Bear Lake certainly produced more mirror carp, albeit, on the small side.
The panko/oats packbait was getting the job done, combined with either sweetcorn, or giant tutti-fruit maize on the hair. I had noticed that the shoreline I chose to fish was very shallow, perhaps 12-18″, extending out to quite a distance from the shoreline, 30-40 yards or more.
To get some additional distance on the cast, i started to wade out 20 yards from the shore and cast from the water. This got to a water depth of about 5 feet. There were sandy bars, at regular distances from the bank, like waves, with flat spots between them. I targeted that flat area between two sand banks.
It was amazing just how clear the water was – absolutely beautiful. There was virtually no weed visible at all and i noticed a large number of remains of small shellfish scattered all across the bank. It was likely that these small crustaceans were a major food supply for the carp.
I finished the session at lunchtime with 6 mirror carp banked. Smallest was 2 lb 4 oz and the largest at 7 lb 8oz. All very healthy and beautiful fish. Sometimes, size does not matter….
