CarpQuest – S1E21 – Chatfield Reservoir Carp Fishing – The Heat is On!
Decided to try a new spot at Chatfield for the first time, Kingfisher. There is lake off to the southwest corner of the reservoir, cut-off frequently due to low water levels from the main water. I also had received a Nash H-Gun Rod Pod from my wife, as another birthday present and was eager to put it to good use!
Arriving at the venue I decided to setup on the east side for the long slender lake, a good distance down from the car park to avoid the usual summer crowds. It was a crazy hot and sunny day, the forecast was for high 80s, low 90s, but the mercury was pushing 100F and my drinking water supplies were dwindling fast.
I fished with both rods, in perhaps 12-14 feet of water, in the center channel of the lake. Panko/oats packbait, this time enhanced with some molasses as the sweetener and sweetcorn on the hair – basically, my new venue go to setup, hard to beat sweetcorn!
The first hour on the bank was quiet, then carp madness erupted just before noon. The afternoon was chaos with the carp bites coming thick and fast. In total I banked 9 carp, commons and mirrors, lost 4 to hook pulls, including what looked like a good high mid-double mirror. All fish landed were between 9 to 12 lbs.
The Nash H-Gun pod worked out great, though it did need to have those feet planted firmly into the shore.
Around 5pm I was out of drinking water, dehydrated and called it quits. What a crazy session.
I will certainly will return again to this lake to see if it holds a few real monsters – though perhaps may wait for some slightly cooler temps next time.
Apologies for the poor sound quality, the wind was blowing across the swim & camera and literally ruined most of the content I had recorded with excessive noise.
Tight-Lines,
John
