CarpQuest – S1E19 – Chatfield Carp FishingÂ
July can be a great month for carp fishing here in Colorado. The temperatures are warm, the weather generally stable and the carp are very active. On a warm Monday morning I returned to Chatfield Reservoir again, this time with James, for a late morning and afternoon session. The sun was shining, temps around the mid 80s, a little wind though there were some ominous storm clouds in the distance.
The water level was down and an area of the bank had opened up to foot access, perhaps 1/3 of a mile up the peninsula from our usual spot. We decided to give this location a bash and made the long walk around the shore and got setup looking out westwards across the reservoir. Rather than the usual shallow slope out, the depths dropped off fairly quickly out into about 10-12 feet of water within 25 to 30 yards.
We were fishing two rods, panko packbait. I used big-bob’s corn on the hair, James had some sweetcorn. The carping action did not disappoint and at one point, we both had fish on at the same time – crazy for sure!
By the mid-afternoon the ominous clouds from earlier had developed into an afternoon thunderstorm. Once we saw the flash of lightning, felt the outflow winds from the storm we decided to call it a day and head home.
I finished the session with a nice common and a mirror carp, James had a great day and banked 5 commons.
Tight-Lines,
John
